This page is my little tribute to the Direct3D enhanced version of Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries by Activision. With regards to framerate numbers in the pictures below my system is a Pentium 100 with the 4MB version of the Nitro 3D by STB Systems. All optional graphics have been turned off (particles, etc.). Unless otherwise noted all screens are 640x480. These screenshots are from the 1.08b1 version (first beta release of the patch). I'm using S3 drivers version 3.11.03 (6/03/97). (Transparencies don't work with the STB drivers that I tried: 1.52A.)
Still need the patch? Get it here.
This is a capture from the first mission (Hanson's Roughriders training mission). The player is in the Commando facing the Catapult which "Dead-Eye" is piloting. Ground textures, 'mech textures, distant mountains and cloud cover all look pretty good. No faults here!
A nice shot on an icy planet. The 'mech textures look particularly nice. Unlike the other screenshots this one was taken with a resolution of 640x400.
A high-level view of a Catapult followed closely by a friendly Atlas. Again, all textures look nice and no visual mistakes. Frame rate meter says 8.7 (remember I only have a P100!).
A Warhawk taken from an Instant Action mission. Note the nice reflection of clouds in the cockpit glass of the 'mech. The building textures were also nicely done. In this screenshot we can see an instance of the most visible flaw of MercsD3D on the Nitro 3D: ground texture tearing (right hand side). Frame rate meter says 9.1.
A Kodiak, again from Instant Action. Frame rate meter says 10.5.
